A new crisis intervention centre has been inaugurated in Gozo. This is the first place in Gozo that will be able to offer alternative shelter to single people or families that are not able to remain in their homes because of social problems.
The centre was inaugurated by the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono and was blessed by H.E. Mgr. Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo.
The Minister explained that the centre had been made possible through the collaboration of the Ministry for Gozo and the Bishop’s Curia in Gozo. She went on to say that it will benefit vunerable people and would be an important asset to to Social Services Unit in Gozo.
The Bishop said that “it is with satisfaction that today we are inaugurating this centre that had been needed in Gozo for some time. With this joint initiative between the Ministry for Gozo and the Church, we are responding to the needs of people who for whatever reason are missing out on love and attention. These are some of the new poor of a modern society.”
The Bishop continued “that this project means but we are addressing the symptoms not the cause of this poverty! Cases such as thes are increasing and that it is important that we do not reamain indifferent, but like the good Samaritan stop to offer care and a home.”
The Crisis Intervention Centre will be able to offer simultaneous support for more than one case at a time, until a more permanent solution to the individuals situation can be assessed. This new centre will be to run through social workers and other competent human resources who will be helping those in need of the service while providing food, a clean environment and other basic necessities.
The centre includes home comforts as well as bedrooms, bathrooms and a kitchen, two living areas and an office equipped with the internet etc.
