Record sum collected in Dar tal-Providenza charity marathon

A record €813,212 were collected in the 16th edition of the annual open day for charity at the Dar tal-Providenza, organised by RTK.
The Director, Fr Martin Micallef, thanked all those hundreds of volunteers that took part in the organisation of the Open Day, but most of all the Maltese people, who once again showered id-Dar tal-Providenza with solidarity and generosity. He said that this money will go a long way towards providing a better life to its residents.
During the day their were visits by the President of Malta, Dr George Abela and Mrs. Abela; the Prime Minister, Dr Lawrence and Mrs. Gonzi; the Leader of the Opposition, Dr Joseph Muscat and Mrs Muscat; Archbishop, Mons. Pawl Cremona OP, Bisphop Mario Grech, Archbishop Emeritus, Mons. Guzeppi Mercieca, European Commissioner Mr John Dalli, amongst others representing both political parties, unions, parishes and various organisations.
The Bishop of Gozo, Mgr Mario Grech, had appealed for donations in aid of Id-Dar tal-Providenza, residential home.
The Bishop said that Id-Dar tal-Providenza at present cares for 102 residents and the Church needs €10,000 each day to run them.
Mgr Grech called on everyone to help with appeals made for donations in aid of the homes. Collections were made in all churches over the New Year weekend.
Anybody who wishedto make a donation was also able to do so by passing it on to the parish priests or rectors, for the total collection to be then presented by the Gozo diocese to the Dar tal-Providenza
The live television broadcast started at 9.00am with Holy Mass from the chapel of the Home and continued till well past midnight when the total sum collected during the day was announced amidst the joy and celebrations of the organisers and volunteers. TVM, Education Channel 22, ONE TV, NET TV Smash TV and Favourite TV took part for long stretches of the 15-hour televised marathon which included entertainment provided by the top singers on the island, various entertainers and village bands that managed to create a festive family atmosphere.
