Ministry for Gozo refutes claims about Xlendi road contractThe Ministry for Gozo in a statement this afternoon referred “to reports that appeared in sections of the local media about the damage in Xlendi Road caused by this week’s storms.” The Ministry said that it “categorically rejects the misinformation which was intended only to deceive.” Work on this road, the Ministry continued, “had been estimated to cost € 4.2 million (VAT excluded) and the contract for these works had a value of € 2.95 million (VAT excluded). These figures are public and can be verified from the website www.contracts.gov.mt.” The Ministry also said that “not a centmore than the value of the contract was spent on these works.”

“The company took this contract was JPF Joint Venture.” the Ministry for Gozo went on to say that “it emphasizes that the choice of both company and contract was made on the basis of a process established and managed by the Department of Contracts and not by any Minister as had been said in some media.”

The Ministry said that it “reaffirms that the damage was caused by a manhole cover not closed properly.” The Ministry stated that it “is also correct in holding the contractor responsible for this damage. So much so that the same contractor is making the necessary repairs at his expense as provided in the works contract.”

The Ministry concluded by saying “the road to Xlendi is another project in aid of the island that thousands of Gozitan, Maltese and foreigners are using. The storm water culverts built into the road which help to avoid flooding in the winter months, are a bonus welcome by owners of commercial establishments and the Xlendi residents.”
