On Saturday, the 19th of November 2011, the Imperial Gozo Yacht Club, held its initial event relating to the establishment of a sailing school, with the participation of eleven students from the Gozo Skola Sport programme. As a basic introduction, the students participated in a demonstration of lifesaving equipment, basic rope-work and after some familiarization with terminology some on-the-water excursions.
With the cooperation of the administration of the Gozo Sports Complex which runs the Skola Sport programme in Gozo, the Club in 2012 will be offering a regular sailing/boating course option as part of the range of sports disciplines for Gozitan children to choose from.
The programme will include dinghy sailing and rowing, apart from also covering Gozo’s maritime heritage. This ambitious endeavour by the Club is made possible through the Eco-Gozo Action Plan 2010-12 implemented by the Ministry for Gozo, which is part-financing this project, including the purchase of sailing dinghies, safety-boat and various other equipment and teaching material.
The Club committee said that it would like to thank the Ministry of Gozo for the financial help and also several Club members who are volunteering their time and others who have donated equipment and materials.
