Updated: Fifty-year-old Benny Attard of Xaghra has been jailed for 30 years for the murder of Gozitan warden Fortunata Spiteri in 2001. Mr Attard who stood accused of involvement in the murder of the Gozitan warden, plead guilty this morning instead of standing trial. He was accused of having, together with others, held and stabbed the warden while she was on duty on August the 10th 2001. Another man, Gianni Attard, is awaiting trial for the wardens murder.

MaltaPost would like to advise all philatelists and collectors that following public demand, it will be issuing a reprint of the €0.37c EUROPA 2008 stamp originally issued last May. This stamp, part of a set of two stamps, had been designed by Edward D. Pirotta. The stamp will be 48.0mm x 39.5mm in size, with a perforation of 14.0 x 14.0 (comb). The stamps are offset printed by Printex Ltd of Qormi on Maltese Cross watermarked paper and available also in sheets of ten. 1st September 2008 Official statistics indicate a substantial decline in the number of illegal immigrants brought ashore last month in comparison to July. On the other hand, the figure is still higher than any other August while July had the highest figure of any month on record. According to a government headcount, the total number of illegal immigrants brought ashore last month was 505, that is 289 fewer than the preceding month's 794. 2nd September 2008 Mobile telephone subscriptions reached 374,507 at the end of June, equivalent to almost 91percent of the population, the National Statistics Office said. In August 2008 compared with July 2008, the industrial producer price index fell by 0.5% in the euro area (EA15) and by 0.7% in the EU272. In July, prices rose by 1.3% and 1.2% respectively. In August 2008 compared with August 2007, industrial producer prices increased by 8.5% in the euro area and by 10.4% in the EU27. These figures come from Eurostat, the Statistical Office of the European Communities. Monthly changes -In August 2008, compared with the previous month, prices in total industry excluding the energy sector rose by 0.2% in both the euro area and the EU27. Buenos Aires & Malta - Malta's EU LIFE Yelkouan Shearwater project (1) was one of the topics selected for a presentation at the opening of BirdLife International's World Conference that hosted over 500 delegates from more than 110 countries and territories around the world. The conference, entitled "Taking on the Millennium Challenge" and held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, was also attended by the Princess of Japan who is the Honorary President of BirdLife International. On Tuesday the 21st of October 2008, Rotary Club Gozo will be hosting a special gala dinner at the Cittadella Centre for Culture and the Arts, St Ursula Hall, The Citadel, Victoria, Gozo. The dinner will commence at 7pm. The 21st of October is the 250th anniversary of Nelson's victory, known as Trafalgar Day. The evening will start a week-long exhibition of marine paintings by Thomas J Burnell, an international marine artist who specialises in ships, seascapes, battles (the Nelson period in particular) and historical events at sea.
