The European Commission has decided to open a new complaint against Malta and will seek clarification from Maltese authorities with regards to the developments taking place at Ramla : the villas on Xaghra side and the huge cemetery on the Nadur side. AD secretary general and spokesman for Gozo Mr Victor Galea said,  "The European Commission has informed in writing, that after preliminary assessment of the information provided by Alternattiva Demokratika and other active citizens, the EU has decided to investigate the breach of directive 85/337/EEC (EIA Directive), as amended, and Directive 92/43/EEC (Habitats Directive) in relation to two proposed developments at Ramla Bay." The seventh Card in a series being issued by Maltapost on a date when the day, month and year coincide - 07.07.07 - will be issued by the Philatelic Bureau of Maltapost plc on Saturday, 7 July and will be available from all Branch Post Offices in Malta and Gozo and from the Maltapost Mobile Unit. The first Card in this series had been issued on 1 January 2001, with a date stamp carrying the same figures, 01.01.01. The last Card in this very collectable series is expected to be issued on 12 December of the year 2012, and stamped with the figures 12.12.12. Read more...

Gozitan athlete Saviour Borg, who is 34 years old and lives in St Lawrenz, is to take part in a marathon in Addis Abba, Ethiopia, in September. The marathon is being held in aid of children who are suffering from leprosy or have a relative with leprosy. Mr Borg, who will be paying all the travelling expenses himself, has already participated in 19 marathons around the world, including Syracuse, Florence, London, Amsterdam, Boston, New York, Rotterdam, Paris, Berlin, Majorca, Newcastle and Budapest. He has also been voted Gozitan Sportsman of the Year three times. Read more...

Victoria is this year celebrating its 120th Anniversary as the Capital City of Gozo. To mark this important event, the Local Council recently brought together the two philharmonic societies of Victoria who performed two hours of music from some of the most important composers of all time. In his speech, Mayor Robert Tabone reminded all those present that it was precisely 22 years ago when both philharmonic societies had performed together in Independence Square. Read more...

Five new laboratories are currently being set up at the Aguis de Soldanis Girls Junior Lyceum and Secondary School in Victoria Gozo with works including the installation of a new fire-security system and a gas system due to start in the coming days. These works follow recently completed works that included the installation of new solar panels, a new electrical system, and painting and plastering. Read more...

Writing in todays Times of Malta, Mr Masini calls for a Gozitan MEP: "It is indeed welcome news that Malta managed to keep its hard earned sixth European Parliament seat first gained in the now defunct Constitutional Treaty. This with effect from the 2009 election. It is suggested that this sixth seat be allocated to Gozo. This would ensure that the island region of Gozo would have an assured direct representation in the European Parliament. Read more...

During the Mnarja long weekend, the Gozo Cultural Council within the Ministry for Gozo, in collaboration with the Munxar Local Council, is organising a two-day cultural activity in the picturesque bay of Xlendi in Gozo. Following the highlight of the Mnarja village festa celebrated on Friday 29th June in Nadur, this special event kicks off on Saturday 30th at 9.00pm with a programme of events which includes Gozitan pop bands 'Mistaken Identity' and 'Cash and Friends', as well as the participation of guest singer Vittorio Gauci. At a press conference in Gozo, Alternattiva Demokratika emphasised the need to create more jobs in Gozo. Chairperson Dr. Harry Vassallo stated that "a more concerted effort is needed to increase job opportunities in Gozo. This will not only contribute towards the economy in Gozo but more importantly will provide much needed jobs on the island for Gozitans, and thereby reduce the hardship faced by many Gozitans who have to travel to Malta each and every single day." Two bodies were recovered from the sea by the Armed Forces of Malta yesterday. The first body was recovered just outside Mgarr harbour early in the afternoon, the second body was recovered later that evening. Both of the bodies were wearing life jackets and in an advanced state of decomposition. Read more...

Civil Society shouts "NO" to more unsustainable and excessive development - yesterday environment Moviment Graffitti along with other representatives of civil society actively participated in the symbolic protest against the "unsustainable and excessive development" that is currently taking place, with yet more proposed, on the island of Gozo. In the last few years, a number of huge development proposals on the island of Gozo have in fact been submitted, these proposals relate amongst others to the development of a yacht marina at Hondoq ir-Rummien, a golf course at Ta' Cenc, a cemetery at Nadur, as well as a number of tourist villages, including hotels, luxury apartments and villas within beautiful scenic localities in Gozo, such as Ramla l-Hamra.
