Until the 31st of May, the Sinclair Stevenson Gallery in Gharb, is hosting the works of Eva Armatys. Eva is donating 20% of the proceeds to The Gozo Hospital Help Fund towards the badly needed portable ultrasound machine for the Maternity and Gynaecological Department. Read more...

The Tourism and Culture Ministry has announced that a Tenori concert will form part of the Notte Gozitana, which is taking place on the weekend between the 18th and 20th of May. Three English tenors, Alexander Grove, Richard Coxon and James Edwards, will be singing several arias such as Nessun Dorma, Because, Maria, Tonight, Caruso, Funiculi Funicula, Thunderball and Granada. 32yr old David Zerafa from Nadur, who stands accused of murdering Gozitan lawyer Michael Grech three years ago, has been granted bail against a Lm21,000 deposit. The ruling was given after the Criminal Court noted that twenty months had elapsed since he was first charged with the murder. The law states that, if the Attorney General has not issued a bill of indictment twenty months after a person's arraignment, then that person must be granted bail. Read more...

Two events, organised on a private initiative, will raise the curtain on the first edition of Lejlet Lapsi Notte Gozitana this May. Held almost simultaneously at two different bastions inside the Citadel, the two events are intended to attract sizeable crowds to give rise to this year's edition of the branded cultural event on Gozo. In a Press statement issued today Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party described the Bill to amend the Housing (Decontrol) Ordinance presently before parliament as an act of immense political cynicism and hypocrisy. Green Party Chairperson Dr Harry Vassallo said that the Bill had been brought before parliament with lightening speed to strengthen the 1979 amendments to the Housing (Decontrol) Ordinance in view of a judgment of the court of appeal finally invalidating this extraordinary and unconstitutional law. In yesterdays Sunday Times, Labour MP Evarist Bartolo outlined his views and proposals for Gozo: "Gozo must be given its own regional structure to promote and manage its social and economic development. Gozo can only have a full and mature tourism industry when it can organise its own lifeline and not try to survive on the scraps that fall from Malta's tourism sector. Gozo must have its own budget to promote and market itself as a destination in its own right and Gozitans themselves must manage this budget. Read more...

The Gaulitanus Choir is extending its Festival of Music, which was due to end today, to include an additional concert on Tuesday. The extra concert came about after the Russian choir, Male Choral Lyceum, which will be in Malta this coming week, approached the Gozitan choir and made known their interest to be included in this, their first, festival. Speaking at a Press Conference in Xaghra, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Dr Harry Vassallo said that changes in planning laws in the run up to the 2003 election are now threatening more than our architectural heritage. "Nationalist governments have treated the construction industry like a spoilt child, spoiling it even when it means evident harm being done to it and to all others." Dr Vassallo said. Read more...

Since the opening of the spring hunting season BirdLife Malta has been receiving regular reports of injured or dead protected birds, the conservation organisation has announced today. Last Thursday a Common Kestrel, a protected species, with a Finnish ring was found dead in a bag hanging at the door of the SPCA in Gozo. The SPCA immediately informed the police in Gozo and BirdLife. Ornithologist Joe Sultana was also contacted to identify the ring on the Kestrel. BirdLife was informed that the bird was ringed under the ringing scheme of the Museum of Zoology in Helsinki, Finland. Read more...
