Two traditional Maltese wooden balconies have now enclosed two of the four apertures in the facade of the new St George's Parish Centre. The traditional Maltese balcony is a wooden closed balcony projecting from the wall. The two 'galleriji maghluqa' were made by two local carpenters, father and son Leone and Jason Scerri. They replace the original balconies which adorned the houses that were pulled down to make way for the new Priests House and Parish Centre. Read more...

BirdLife Malta has pressed Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi to take the opportunity offered by the upcoming EU delegation visit to announce the government's intention to retract its decision to allow spring hunting. Failure to do so could result in Malta being taken to the European Court of Justice much sooner than the government predicted, the organisation said following the EU executive's decision to send a supplementary warning letter. Winter Moods will be celebrating 20 years of music with an official anniversary concert at the XS Club in Victoria, on Saturday the 31st of March. Bishop Mario Grech has appointed Fr Charles Sultana, from the Xaghra parish, as his personal secretary and also as vice parish priest of the San Lawrenz parish. Fr Sultana was ordained in 2003. After his formation at the Gozo seminary and the Universita Angelicum in Rome, Fr Sultana served in a parish in Jalapa, Guatemala with Gozitan missionary Fr Anton Grech. Read more...

A group of 15 students from the Wistin Camilleri Gozo Centre for Art and Crafts in Ghajnsielem Gozo left for Austria this week. They are on an 8-day trip which will see them visiting Vienna, Salzburg, Munich and the Czech Republic. This is the first time that the Centre has embarked on a student exchange programme. The Gozo Ministry has commissioned an expert to assess whether the chimney at Gozo General Hospital is having an adverse effect on the recompression chamber which has just been installed. Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said that the necessary tests were currently underway, she was replying to a Parliamentary question put by Labour MP Evarist Bartolo.

The Nadur Local Council, in collaboration with the Circolo Gozitano, is issuing a special limited edition of 1,000 postal cards featuring Ta' Sopu Tower. The issue will be date stamped on Sunday 25th March at the Nadur Local Council, with a special cancellation by Maltapost, to mark the celebrations of the 50th Anniversary of the Treaty of Rome which are being held in Nadur this coming weekend. Gozo's stray cats, along with Malta's, experience all the problems that result from the lack of a consistent, government-supported programme for spaying and neutering. Recently, thanks to the help and sponsorship of Happy Paws, 'The Gozo Cat Team' have begun to organise a group of volunteers to undertake a concerted effort to catch, spay or neuter, and, as soon as they recover, release stray cats back to their home territories.
