The Malta Environment and Planning Authority has approved alterations to landscaping and apartments as well as an extension to the underground car park at Fort Chambray. The authority followed the advice of its Planning Directorate and sanctioned the development subject to a number of conditions which relate to landscaping, monitoring and a planning contribution. Three years have passed since Dr. Mario Saliba published his first edition of the 'Guide to Country Walks in Nadur', his book was sold out within a few months of its publication. Since then, Dr. Saliba didn't find the time to retrace his footsteps and prepare a new issue. Recently though he decided that he must spare some time to prepare a new edition for 2007. Read more...

Bishop Mario Grech will lead the liturgical celebrations to be held at the Gozo Cathedral, Victoria, during the coming Holy Week. On Palm Sunday, the bishop will lead the celebration of the blessing of palm and olive branches. The canonisation of Dun Gorg Preca will be marked by a school holiday for students attending state, church and independent schools. The 4th of June is the day following Pope Benedict XVI's declaration of Mgr Preca as a saint, the Education Ministry said. Education Minister Louis Galea said a number of teachers, including members of the MUSEUM Christian doctrine society, have asked for vacation leave to be able to attend the canonisation ceremony in Rome. The Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, has inaugurated a 'Health and Safety' exhibition, which is being organised for the second year running, by Gozitan schools at the Sports Complex in Victoria. This exhibition, appropriately titled 'Feel Safe Be Safe', is aimed at increasing Health and Safety awareness in every day life as well as to further educate the general public about the importance of creating a safer and healthier environment for students and staff in schools. In accordance with Section 70 of the Local Councils Act (Act No. XV of 1993), an annual public meeting is going to be held in Nadur tomorrow at the Joe Tabone Hall, North Street at 7:30 p.m. The budget for the financial year which starts in April 2007 and ends in March 2008 will be discussed, whilst details will also be given about the different projects which are being planned. Archbishop Paul Cremona and Gozo Bishop Mario Grech are granting a special faculty to priests during the coming Holy Week, they will be allowed to absolve those who confess reserved sins which can normally only be absolved by bishops. According to Canon law, sins such as abortion, heresy, apostasy and schisms are classified as reserved sins. Read more...

The Bank of Valletta has signed up as a main sponsor for the extensive programme of cultural events being organized for the 18th, 19th and the 20th of May in Victoria. The events, known as Lejlet Lapsi Notte Gozitana, are being organized jointly by the Ministry for Gozo and the Ministry for Tourism and Culture. "We are delighted to support Lejlet Lapsi - Notte Gozitana in line with BOV's commitment of promoting tourism in Gozo and of playing a leading role in the promotion of arts and culture in our country," said Tonio Depasquale, Chief Executive Officer at Bank of Valletta. The fourth edition of the Golden Cross International Singing Festival is to be held at the La Grotta complex at Xlendi from the 24th to the 27th of July. The festival will consist of a junior contest for children aged between 6 and 15 years old and another competition for those aged between 16 and 35 years old. Read more...
