The Ramblers Association of Malta (RAM) staged a protest outside the Munxar Local Council Office yesterday, the association were protesting against the construction of the concrete road which was recently carried out on the cliffs at Sanap. During a meeting with the Gozo Tourism Association at its offices in Victoria Gozo, Alternattiva Demokratika Chairperson, Dr Harry Vassallo said that Gozitan operators had every right to complain that existing tourism structures did not focus sufficiently on Gozo. "Gozo is not a sector amongst others such as diving or cultural tourism but a separate region which demands and deserves separate branding and marketing" Dr Vassallo said. Dr Vassallo said that Alternattiva Demokratika is very much in tune with the concerns expressed by the GTA regarding services such as public transport in Gozo, a shuttle bus service between the Gozo ferry and Luqa airport and the need to establish a viable air-link between Gozo and Luqa airport. This Saturday the 24th of February, Archbishop Mons Paul Cremona is going to pay his first pastoral visit to the Gozo Diocese. On Saturday morning the Archbishop will be holding morning prayers for Lent with the Gozitan clergy and will then be taking lunch with them. Later at 6.00pm the Archbishop will be celebrating a High Mass at the Cathedral, to which all the people of Gozo are invited to attend.

The Gozo Trade Fair Committee of the Gozo Business Chamber is busy organising the 6th edition of the Gozo Trade Fair which will be taking place from the 7th to the 10th of June. The Trade Fair will as usual be held at the Gozo Sports Complex in Victoria. The committee is looking for official sponsors and anyone interested should contact the chairman of the committee on 99477866. Exhibitors who would like to participate are kindly requested to contact the office of the Gozo Business Chamber on 21550305. As an incentive to participating exhibitors, the committee will reward those who participate for five consecutive years by presenting them with a trophy and diploma.

The first Crafts Incubation Centre, being built in Gozo, and which is part of a project being carried out under the Structural Funds Programme for Malta 2004-2006, co-financed under the European Regional Development Fund, entered into its second phase with all construction work finished in recent days. This Ministry for Gozo project provides an added opportunity for craftspersons in Gozo in the initial phases of their trade, with the provision of ten units to be utilised by newly-created businesses in the production of crafts. The health services section of the Union Haddiema Maghqudin believes that ambulance drivers in Gozo are not being treated well by the authorities. In a statement, the union has said that in Gozo, ambulance drivers work on a different system to that of their Maltese counterparts, and that this results in lower wages for the Gozitan drivers. The union added that it was prepared to take all the necessary action required to defend the rights of the Gozitan ambulance drivers.

Archbishop Emeritus Joseph Mercieca and Gozo Bishop Mario Grech will attend the Consistory of Cardinals called by Pope Benedict XVI , which is being held tomorrow at the Vatican. During a press conference today, Alternattiva Demokratika (AD) Chairperson Dr . Harry Vassallo tackled the issue of law enforcement: "Many residents feel alone and isolated when they turn to authorities for help. There is no one clear agency whom people can turn to when they feel that the law is being disregarded to their detriment. This includes disrespect of building regulations and a total disregard to whole neighbourhoods in the vicinity of building sites; public health issues; and even the total disrespect of peace and quiet in residential areas. The Rosa Magro primary school in Xewkija is currently undergoing intensive modernisation works through the direct investment of Lm130,000 by the Ministry for Gozo. On visiting the school premises earlier today the Hon. Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, praised the works carried out up to now and said that this project proves the Ministry for Gozo's commitment towards the continuous improvement of the education sector in Gozo. A 46yr old man from Xewkija suffered serious injuries after falling from a plank on a construction site in Victoria yesterday. Police have said that the man was rushed to Gozo General Hospital suffering from serious injuries but was not in a critical condition. Police investigations are continuing.
