SOS Hondoq pleased at recommendation of Hondoq refusalMoviment Harsien Hondoq said that it was “very pleased” that the Envrionmental Protection Deirectorate of MEPA had recommended refusal of the Hondoq project application.” The proposal was for a €120 million tourist complex at Hondoq ir-Rummien.

As well as many objections from NGOs, the Church’s environmental Commission also came out against the development in a report in July 2010, stating that “it is not sustainable.” The Commission was in favour of the transformation of the quarry to a National Park.

Moviment Harsien Hondoq said in it’s statement, “We as Moviment Harsien Hondoq are very pleased to read that MEPA has recommended ‘refusal’ of the Hondoq project application.”

“We agree especially with the conclusion of the report which states that the area should be for the general public’s recreation. This is what we have been claiming since the application was first lodged nine years ago, that the area should be turned into a national park where everyone can enjoy without many expenses.”

“We now hope that this application will also be refused when it goes in front of the MEPA board,” the statement concluded.

I don’t want to seem pessimistic, etc. But may I remind you that while this may be a battle victory for us, the war against the ruthless speculators is still ongoing. We must keep alert and carry on fighting to protect our environment, our village, our crystal clear water in Hondoq, our tomorrow; if not for us then let’s do it for our kids.

I am old fashion, but I like to see something new and exciting and that would have been HONDOQ IR-RUMMIEN for me and very disappointed and a happy S.O.S. to the above comments!!

I think this story has away to go as its seems they normally agree applications and then refuse and then finally allow it to go through without any problems.lets hope this does not go the same way!

Charles Portelli I agree with everything you say here. This is a great victory for Moviment Harsien Hondoq and the people of Qala owe a big thank you to Pawlu and Carmen Buttigieg who have given every minute they could spare to fight for this result. However it must now come before the Mepa board and we all know that in the past they have swept such recommendations aside. Let’s not drop the ball just yet. We must keep up the fight until such times as Hondoq is bestowed with a protection order to ensure that no development for profit can ever take place in the area.

Many, many thanks to Moviment Harsien Hondoq and especially to Paul and Carmen Buttigieg for their unending hard work to save this bay. Of course thanks also go to everyone who was involved in trying to save this bay.

I sincerely hope that MEPA does not renege on this decision in the future. Unfortunately, the battle in not yet won!
