A 39-year old Maltese diver was earlier today rescued by an Armed Forces of Malta helicopter from the rough seas off Dwejra’s inland sea in Gozo.
Mr. Godwin Abela was diving in the company of another diver when he could not reach the inlet in the Dwejra coastline’s rock face that leads back into the inland sea. His diving companion managed successfully to make it to shore and with the help of passersby and other eyewitnesses, managed to alert the AFM’s Operations Centre at Luqa Barracks.
An AFM Air Wing Alouette rescue-helicopter was scrambled to scene, and successfully located the stranded diver in force 5 to 6 seas as the winds blowed locally in a North to North Westerly direction. Once Mr. Abela was winch-hoisted safely onbaord the helicopter, he was conveyed to an awaiting ambulance nearby. He is reported as in good health but slightly fatigued after the experience.
