The Teatru Astra was once again the perfect venue for a musical evening presented by the ‘La Stella’ Philharmonic Band. The Annual Symphonic Concert was presented last Saturday, a large audience attended the event, including the Hon. Anton Tabone, Speaker of Parliament, and Mrs Tabone, Mayor Robert Tabone, Dr Joseph Grech, President of the La Stella Philharmonic Society, Mgr Paul Cardona, archpriest of St George’s, Mgr Joseph Farrugia, archpriest emeritus of St George’s Basilica.
It was a varied programme of music, exquisitely performed, with the star of the night being Mr George Camilleri, on the euphonium, who performed as a soloist in George Doughty’s piece ‘Grand Father’s Clock’. The programme of music which combined traditional and contemporary repertoire included Badelt’s ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’; Wagner’s overture from ‘Rienzi’; the 1st movement of Dvorak’s ‘New World Symphony’ and a selection of Verdi’s ‘Macbeth’.
The programme also included Joseph Vella’s latest composition ‘In Memoriam Mgr Salv Borg’ a funeral march in honour of Mgr Borg, former chaplain of the La Stella Philharmonic Society who passed away last September. The ‘La Stella’ band was under the baton of Mro Joseph Vella.
