A group from the Local Council’s of Ghajnsielem and Gharb were recently invited by the Erchie Local Council, a small town in the Province of Brindisi in Italy, to participate in an EU programme,’Religious Tourism’ for small provincial towns in the EU.
Other participants included the Romania communities of Bogati and Valvori De Jos.
The cultural trip was funded by a European Union programme, which is focused on boosting religious tourism between small provincial towns. The programme also tried to valorise local traditions linked with celebrations of saints, in order to create specific occasions of reflection on how religious tourism can be included in the planning of local territorial polices in order to keep local traditions alive, consolidate social cohesion and stimulate local economies.
During the 8-days tour, the Mayors of Ghjansielem and Gharb had very interesting meeting with the vice Mayor of Brindisi in which the possibility was discused of organising a fair in Gozo, with local products such as olive oil, wine and honey, as well as produce from the Brindisi region.
