A tribute to Cecil Caley – At peace on his ‘island of dreams’

Cecil-Caley.jpgAs some people may know, my father was taken on his last journey of this world last week. His journey started on the 27th of June 1929 in a small village outside of Hull. He worked in Hull, London and Italy before running a china and glass shop in North Yorkshire.

The eighties were a hard time, during which his journey nearly ended, but by the early nineties there was a spring in his step. He took a holiday on Malta and came home tanned and relaxed, this he did for a couple of years, then by chance he went for 3 months to the Calypso at Marsalforn, this changed everything and over time his stays got longer, then disaster the Calypso would shut for refurbishment, he felt worried but soon after received an offer of a flat in Rabat. He came home talked to the family and then in October 1998 he came to live on his “island of dreams” and though he came back to the UK to visit family every year his heart and happiness were in Gozo.

When we came to visit we could see how this was now his home were he could sit and tell his tales and talk with the locals in the cafés and street bars. His health got better with your warm sun on his back and he found peace. I would sum my father up as someone who believed in honesty, fair play and a decent man who loved life, especially in Gozo.

So it fell that with the sun in the sky we made, with him and his friends, his final journey to the Chapel of the Sacred Heart Seminary for his service and then burial just outside of Rabat on Friday the 7th of December 2007. We were so pleased to see so many people that came to send him, with love and fond memories, on his next great journey.

I would like to thank everyone who knew him and stopped by for a chat in St. Francis Square or in the past at the Calypso Hotel or just in the street ,and especially to Julie and the girls, Viga and Snowflake, George and Mario who filled his amazing life with such fun and happiness. True friends.

I finish by wishing everyone in Gozo my heart felt gratitude for the warmth you showed my father over many years and I know that he is at peace with you all.

Yours Sincerely,

Angus Caley

I think your father was my boss during the 1960’s and 1970,s when I worked for Harlands of Hull, a specialist label printer in Hull and Anlaby, East Yorkshire.

He certainly was a great boss to work for and made my years at Harlands very enjoyable.
He was the Sales Manager and I worked for him in the Harlands studio as a graphic artist.
I just by chance did a name search on the Internet and this page came up.

I am sad that he passed away in 2007, he left a great impression on me and I will always remember him.

    Yours sincerely
