Melita selects Cisco for FibrePower broadband speeds

Melita announced that it has chosen the worldwide leader in networking CISCO to usher in the roll-out of a next-generation cable broadband technology across all of Malta and Gozo by this summer.
The implementation of the latest generation of DOCSIS 3.0® cable technology, including high-speed cable modems, will enable Melita to take broadband access in Malta to the next level and provide broadband speeds that can reach up to 100 megabits per second to any Maltese business or home located anywhere in Malta and Gozo.
Melita’s next-generation FibrePower network will not be restricted to specific zones on the Islands or require major infrastructural works. The FibrePower technology will help Melita pave the way for future enhancements in the way that fixed services are provided over its cable network. It will facilitate the convergence of data, voice and video over an Internet Protocol-based infrastructure.
This investment by Melita follows the infrastructural upgrades completed last year to address the ever-increasing demand for IP traffic and resolve areas of congestion. Through this upgrade, Melita was also able to double the upload speeds for almost all its subscribers to satisfy the increasing demand for user generated content uploads to social networking sites, video and other similar applications.
Commenting on this important milestone in Malta’s development of broadband services, Melita’s Chief Operations Officer Mr. Ludolf Rasterhoff said, “Melita is the leader in innovation and broadband technology, and this is proven in that we have consistently delivered higher speeds and quality of service to our customers. We currently offer Internet connections to all households in Malta and Gozo of up to 50 megabits per second, which is more than double what local DSL providers currently offer. This new technology will enable us to deliver double that, with speeds of up to 100 megabits per second while also improving customer experience through enhanced quality-of-service parameters.”
Mr. Jordi Botifoll, Cisco’s Vice President, Mediterranean Geography said, “Cisco’s vision is to help transform cable providers into experience providers that will offer richer, faster, enhanced services to consumers. Cisco’s Next-Generation Network technology has the ability to take broadband access to the next level and accelerate this transformation. We are glad that Melita shares the same vision for providing enhanced, high-quality services to its customers, and we are proud to be contributing to this fantastic project.”
