Agenzija Zghazagh was officially launched on Saturday 5th February 2011. The agency has two main functions which include policy, mainstreaming and research together with youth empowerment. The agency has already started working in the various fields and is already providing opportunities and services that empower young people.
Youth Local Councils is an empowerment project of Agenzija Zghazagh. It provides young people with the opportunity to become active citizens and make themselves heard by participating in the Youth Local Councils. The opportunity is open to young people between the ages of 14 to 17.
Young people who chose to embark on this experience are expected to carry out research work in an attempt to identify the needs of the locality. Relevant issues are then discussed with representatives from the Local Council and hence young people are empowered to engage in decision making. Young people are then assisted to prepare their proposed project for their locality.
Three proposals will be partially financed by the government and partially by the respective Local Councils. In the meantime all participants will be provided with training which aims to assist young people to carry out their respective roles within the Local Council.
Presently there are twenty-seven participating localities, three of which are localities in Gozo. These are Nadur, Qala and Sannat. Youth workers have been employed to assist young people in this venture. Training seminars for young participants have already been held in Malta whilst the training seminars for Gozitans will take place in the Ministry Hall in Victoria Gozo on Saturday, the 12th of March. A total of thirty Gozitan youth will be benefiting from these training seminars.
Agenzija zghazagh has recently launched its youth information portal called Youth Information Malta This can be accessed by visiting www.agenzijazghazagh.gov.mt.
This web portal is another service of Agenzija Zghazagh aimed at empowering young people by providing relevant information about a variety of themes ranging from Education to Leisure. Young people and their organisations can also use the web portal to promote their events. The web portal is also a showcase of youth opportunities at national and European levels. It is expected that the portal will be developed further according to needs drawn from feedback of visitors.
Until the end of May 2011, young visitors aged between 13 and 30 will have the opportunity to participate in a competition and win great prizes kindly offered by Vodafone Malta.
