This coming Sunday, the 28th of November 2010, the Xaghra Parish of the Nativity of Our Lady, will salute the memory of Bishop Nicholas Joseph Cauchi, who passed to eternal life earlier during this month. Bishop Cauchi led the Diocese in one of most turbulent periods in its history between July 1972 and January 2006 and was instrumental in adopting the principles discussed during the Second Vatican Council. He will also be commemorated for the several projects of material and spiritual importance which he completed in Gozo.
The Xaghra Parish will give this tribute during a Solemn De Requiem Concelebrated Mass at the Collegiate Basilica and Sanctuary of the Nativity of Our Lady at 11.00am. Mass begins at 11.00am and will be presided by H.L. Bishop Mario Grech, together with the Most Reverend Chapter and Clergy of the Parish. This solemn liturgy will be animated by Schola Cantorum Jubilate.
The Xaghra Parish is strongly tied with Bishop Nicholas Cauchi since he was the main protagonist in several historical events which form part of its story. Two of these main events are the acquisition of the honorific title of ‘Basilica’ to the Collegiate Church of the Nativity of Our Lady in August 1967 and later, the coronation of the titular statue of Maria Bambina on 2nd September 1973. The Parish said that it feels it is its duty to commemorate the Bishop’s memory and thank him for the works which he performed diligently during his Episcopate.
Xaghra Archpriet Mgr Carmelo Refalo, together with the Reverend Chapter and Clergy of the Parish warmly invite all Gozitans to remember Bishop Cauchi in their prayers and offer some kind of penitence for his soul’s suffrage.
