The Laudate Pueri Choir of St George’s Basilica is completing it’s Agrigento Choral Tour, which started on Friday, the 12th of November.
The tour in the famous Valle dei Templi unique environs in Agrigento. The choir was expressly invited by the festival’s artistic director, Mgr Giuseppe Liberto, director emeritus of the Papal Choir Cappella Sistina, to be the ospiti d’onore for the fifth edition of the Festival Cori in Concordia: Canto per la Pace alla Valle dei Templi, in Agrigento. This special honour accorded to the choir entails, apart from joining forces as the leading choir with other three choral ensembles from Sicily, also a special sacred choral concert during which the choir is interpreting works by De Victoria, Palestrina, Balzano, Viadana, Bartolucci, Caruana and Vella.
The concert, Cantica Sacra, was held on Friday at the Basilica di San Nicola alla Valle dei Templi under the distinguished patronage of the Commune di Agrigento and the University of Agrigento.
Yesterday, the choir together with the other choral ensembles sang Liberto’s massive Magnificat, which the Cappella Sistina Choir had sung at St George’s during their memorable concert in April 2006.
As special guests, the Laudate Pueri Choir were invited to sing three pieces during the concert. The choir interpreted three of Vella’s endearing motets composed specifically for the female section of the choir, and which have always been direct hits whenever and wherever they have been sung, namely Rorate cæli op. 84, the Agnus Dei (Missa Brevis) op. 40, and his four-part arrangement of the Caruana/Psaila hymn in honour of Our Lady, Fil-hlewwa ta’ Mejju. This concert was held at the Basilica di San Domenico.
This morning at 11.00am the choral ensemble, which will feature close to two hundred choristers, sang Liberto’s Missa Ottava during High Mass at the Basilica di San Domenico.
