The Manoel Theatre’s top selling show is back for its 13th edition – first night already nearly sold out!
With its trademark selection of rock, pop and alternative performances, it has built a reputation as the best place to catch a blend of established and upcoming acts in one hard-to-beat line-up. This year is no different, and audiences can look forward to six unique performances in one jam-packed evening. The shows will be on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of December, starting at 8.00pm.
“The formula seems to work extremely well,” says Go Teatru Unplugged co-founder Jonathan Shaw, who originally dreamt up the concept for the show in 1998 with co-founder Nirvana Azzopardi. “It has achieved something of a cult following with a high percentage of repeat guests year on year.”
“The show does evolve a little each edition based on the feedback we receive from audience members, but on the whole we keep it fresh by inviting a variety of new and well-loved acts to take part each year. Its format is largely responsible for its success, as with six short and diverse sets everyone is bound to find something that just what they fancy.”
The 13th edition will feature upcoming singer Megan Balzan (this year’s ‘young talent act’) accompanied by Rosetta De Battisa; popular band Chasing Pandora; the Renzo Spiteri Terra Project featuring vocalist Peter Grech; award-winning local band Beige; Glee-inspired choir The Blast; and London-based band Fraser. Additionally, it will be presented by the highly entertaining Pawlu Borg Bonaci, frontman for local band Fakawi.
Speaking about the event, renowned percussionist Mr Spiteri said, “I’ve watched Go Teatru Unplugged grow from its first edition 13 years ago to an annual event with a very strong following that entices new audiences into the Manoel Theatre. There is something about Unplugged that makes me want to be a part of it every year, and I will be launching an exciting new project at this year’s edition.”
New to the event, The Blast director Denise Mulholland said, “Rosetta De Battista and I were inspired to create The Blast having watched Glee for the millionth time. Although there is a lot going on in the local theatre scene, there wasn’t a vocal group aimed exclusively at 14 to 18 year olds, so we held auditions and selected 27 fantastic young singers.”
“Teatru Unplugged has always provided a platform for local artists and musicians in Malta, and we’re thrilled to be making our debut as part of this year’s edition. It promises to be very exciting.”
Early booking is definitely recommended as tickets for the first night are already nearly sold out. For further information visit www.choosemalta.com/tu.
Meanwhile, on Saturday and Sunday, an after party will be held at Premier in Valletta to ensure the vibrant GO Teatru Unplugged atmosphere lives on long into the night!
