Official Inauguration of the Xaghra Parish Cemetery’s extensionThis coming Sunday, the 31st of October 2010, the Parish of the Nativity of Our Lady in Xaghra will officially inaugurate the major project of the Parish Cemetery’s extension. This project initiated in 2007 on the initiative of the present Archpriest Mgr Carmelo Refalo who always gave importance to the need for the Xaghra Parish to have a more adequate place where it can give a decent burial to its parishioners.

With the enthusiasm and financial aid of the Xaghra people, the works began after a long and exhausting process of application and approval of the project by the Malta Environment and Planning Authority. The works consisted of the conservation of the common part of the cemetery which was collapsing and the construction of a new extension which can be accessed from a stairs near the chapel or directly from a separate entry. After the completion of this project, the Xaghra cemetery now comprises around 500 graves. During the first half of this month, the contracts were signed by which the private graves passed to their respective owners. During the last two weeks, the transfer of the earthly remains of several people from various cemeteries around Gozo to be buried in the new extension of the Xaghra cemetery took place.

The project will be inaugurated next Sunday, Eve of All Saints’ Day, At 4.00pm, H.L. Bishop Mario Grech presides over a Solemn Concelebrated Mass with the participation of the Chapter and Clergy of the Xaghra Collegiate Church. Soon afterwards, Bishop Grech recites the prayers of blessing and inaugurates the new extension to the cemetery. The Voci Angeliche Choir animates this Liturgy. The celebration prepares the faithful to join the Catholic Church in the Solemn Honour given to All Saints in Heaven on Monday the 1st of November and the Solemn Commemoration of All Faithful Departed on Tuesday the 2nd of November. During the first week of November, the various non-governmental and social organisations in Xaghra organise their annual pilgrimage of prayers to the cemetery. The pilgrimage leaves the Basilica at 5.30pm and ends with Solemn Mass celebrated in the Cemetery’s chapel at 6.00pm.

The Xaghra Parish said that it would like to remind Catholics that those who visit the cemetery with devotion between the 1st and 8th of November will have the possibility of acquiring the Plenary Indulgence. The Partial Indulgence can be obtained by visiting the cemetery between the 9th and the 30th of November. The Xaghra Parish would like to use this project to continuously remind us to offer prayers, sacrifices and acts of mercy for the suffrage of the souls in purgatory especially during the month of November.
