The Mental Health Association of Gozo has been established as part of activities organised by the Ministry for Gozo to mark the World Mental Health Day, which was celebrated on Sunday, the 10th of October.
Last weekend’s programme of activities were organised to highlight the stigma of mental health and social exclusion, which reflects the lack of knowledge in this field. The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, said that a prevention programme has been launched aimed at primary school children. During a visit made by the Minister to a primary school in Victoria she explained how experts from the Ministry will provide help and information with the help of printed material from the Mental Health Association.
The announcement of the official establishment of the Mental Health Association of Gozo was made during an organised cinema event where the film ‘A Beautiful Mind,’ was shown, this served as the starting point for a discussion that followed from the large audience who attended for this evening.
The Minister said that the Association would be a learning initiative that will be an ongoing contribution to both patients and families on the island. She went on to say that the activities being held in Gozo show a serious effort to contributing towards awareness about the condition . The Minister said that the Ministry is committed to strengthen even further the services in the health sector in Gozo which includes services for mental health patients.
