The first edition of the ‘Figs Festival’ held over the weekend in Xaghra ended yesterday with a feast of fig-made products which was held in the main square, between 8.00am and 1.00pm. Many people participated including a number of local farmers who cultivate figs in their fields and some confectioners and individuals from Xaghra who prepared sweets from from figs.
For this occasion, with the kind permission of Mrs. Frances Busuttil and Ms. Victoria Camilleri, the Xaghra Local Council published an interesting booklet containing six recipes involving figs together with some general historical information about this typical Maltese product.
Between noon and 1.00pm, a number of local musicians performed traditional Maltese music for the appreciation of the general public. At the end of this activity and as an address of conclusion, Xaghra Mayor, Joseph Cordina, in the name of the Xaghra Local Council, thanked the foreign delegation for its participation in this Festival and presented them with mementos as a sign of gratitude. Mr. Vincenzo De Leonardis and Mr. Pier Angelo Argentieri, from the foreign delegation thanked the Council for its hospitality and for the beautiful moments which were shared together in the last few days.
Everyone hoped that the existent collaboration between the fig-producing cities around the European continent continues to strengthen so that more similar festivals can be held in the near future. After all this hard work and energy which resulted in a successful activity, the Italian and French delegation will spend some more leisure time in Gozo before leaving the island tomorrow.
The Xaghra Local Council said that it would like to thank all those who worked with them in the last months so that this Figs Festival was an experiment which turned out to be a great success. The Council hopes that after this activity, everyone trys to appreciate more the value of figs in the Maltese and Gozitan kitchen. The council said it is looking forward with optimism to build on this edition and ameliorate where possible for everyone’s satisfaction.!

I’d like to thank the Xaghra Council for keeping the Xaghrin Tradition with the Figs Festival they made. Its very beautiful to keep this Tradition going . …
PS I remember it very well during War II when we had no food to eat, except the Figs that our father used to make for us for Winter. It was so delicious
