Captain Johannes Mateboer, of the MV Noordam, the largest cruise ship to visit Gozo, welcomed the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, and the Parliamentary Assistant within the Ministry for Gozo, Frederick Azzopardi, when they made a brief visit to the ship while it was berthed outside the port of Mgarr today. The Minister expressed satisfaction at the way Gozo has started to benefit from the cruiseliner tourism sector, through coordinated work between the Ministry for Gozo and the local companies that work in this sector. Thanks to this, a number of ships are now including Gozo in the schedule of stops so that their passengers are experiencing the island of Gozo.
The Minister said that besides generating trade in other economic sectors, the visits from cruiseliners serve as a direct promotion for Gozo as a tourist product. The Ministry is therefore committed to enhancing the potential of Gozo in attracting tourists from the cruiseliner sector.
The Master and Minister thanked all those who were instrumental for the visit of the MV Noordam Gozo. The Minister for Gozo went on to say how Gozo is proposing an alternative site where ships of this type could anchor, now that the work on the Xlendi buoy has now been completed.
