The Gozo Cathedral Youth Choir have recently toured the historic centre of Rome, during which it had the unique opportunity to sing the Holy Mass in the Vatican Basilica of St Peter, under the musical direction of Matthew Sultana, the Holy Mass was lead by Gozo Cathedral Archpriest Mgr Joseph Attard.
The repertoire sung included traditional hymns in Maltese, an adaptation of Nadurawk Ja Hobz tas-Sema, and a specially composed Ave Maria and Sanctus for the occasion, by the director and leader, Matthew Sultana.
Choir members had the opportunity to attend one of Italian rock-artist Ligabue’s live concerts at the Stadio Olimpico and also sang another mass in St Ignatius’ Parish – the parish where Mgr Attard has served for more than two decades before being called to serve as parish priest of the Gozo Cathedral – during which the Gozitan group was given a very warm welcome by the parishoners. Another young Gozitan priest, Fr Richard N Farrugia, who is currently serving in this parish, also concelebrated.
A reception then followed as the large group of Gozitan and Italian youngsters watched the Spanish team win the World Cup Final on the big screen.
The Youth Choir’s tour also included visits to the main historic and artistic attractions of the eternal city.
