The project of upgrading and refurbishment of the valley has been taking place over a number of years. The next phase of works will focus on the creation and improvement of footpaths in the countryside so that the valley and the coastline become more accessible.
The Parliamentary Secretary, Chris Said and the Mayor of Gharb, David Apap, visited the area to see the works that have alread been completed, and those that will be undertaken in the next phase. These include among others: improving the accessibility to the valley through the construction of bridges, the construction of stairs to the sea and the installation of safety railings for the use of bathers, the planting of trees and improvements to the road. There will also be cameras powered by solar energy.
Informational material will be published, including brochures and a booklet on the area of the Wied Il-Mielah and other places of interest in Gharb, to be used as an aid for tourists, as well as audiovisual materials that will also be installed. A new website is to be launched giving information on Gozo as a destination for walking holidays.
The project’s ultimate aim is to offer a renovated local area for the benifit of local and foreign visitors, specifically for those who enjoy walks in the countryside. This will make the village of Gharb more competitive in terms of a rural tourist destination.
