GRTU supports the proposed Qala Marina and tourist villageThe GRTU has said that the proposed Qala Marina and tourist Village comprising a 5 star hotel top notch apartments, a yacht marina, a new top class water front and new facilities for entertainment, beach and water for the public enjoyment is more than commendable.

“The original design proposed in 2002 was met with strong opposition because it was too dense and very unfair on the facilities available for the general public. Following more than €2 million in expense by the promoters in evaluating all the aspects of the project to ensure that the project achieves development sustainability based on economic viability, environment protection and social cohesion. The new development is now highly acceptable. In an island like Gozo where hardly any new investment is taking place because so many have taken it upon themselves to shoot down any investment primarily on environmental grounds, the creation of new jobs for Gozitans within the private sector is becoming increasingly problematic. Gozitans cannot continue to depend on public sector employment and the trend is and will remain for this to diminish. The way forward is private investment.”

“I can confirm as Director of Malta Enterprise that inspite the efforts and attractive schemes specifically designed to promote invest- ment, foreign investors are hesitant to promote investment in Gozo. The same is true for Maltese investors. Many in Gozo are fortunate enough to scare away Gozitan investors from investing in their own beautiful island. Serious Gozitan investors like Victor Borg of Ta` Cenc, Dr Victor Bajada of Qala Marina and Tourist Village and Dr Michael Caruana, just to mention 3, are finding it increasingly hard to push forward with their ambitious plans to engage Gozo’s tourism attractions as too many armchair critics are too eager to invent issues that discourage any genuine investor.”

“It has now reached the stage where public hearing on multi-million projects like the one held this week at Qala are becoming nothing but a farce, or worse still a tragedy. Serious investors cannot be given the treatment that the Qala Tourist Village promoters have re- ceived this week. GRTU believes in Gozo, strongly supports Gozitan investors and does all it can to also help attract new foreign inves- tors that could help make the Gozitan economy more sustainable. Gozo needs action not words. Gozitan investors need support, with- out them Gozo is poor and poor indeed. That is why I stood up at Qala and boldly supported the Qala Marina and tourist Village project,” concluded Vince Farrugia, GRTU Director General

@ Vince Farrugia. We are not stupid and we know that a Yacht Marina few meters away from the Hondoq Bay will certainly contaminate the bay .

And in regards to the work that you said the opponents are scaring away, I humbly ask you; Where were you all these years when Gozo has been sinking due to lack of unemployment? Is this being promoted as the salvation for GOZO? Certainly not!

Mr Farrugia we Gozitans know what` best for us.

Dear Vince, you are a gonzipn poodle after all, so your pro-project stance comes as no surprise really. However, I find it very hard to digest the insults coming out of your mouth at the public meeting last week. More than anyone else, you really should know better than that………

Why do you have such a ferocious grudge against the residents of Qala? Let me think, maybe were you (by any chance) promised some “incentive” to take such particular stand?????

    3. Joseph Cutajar says:

Dear Mr Farrugia, I have a simple question for you and I hope you answer it honestly. Are you personally going to gain from this Hondoq Project?? Because that is what this Hondoq project is all about. WE ARE NOT STUPID….

    4. Peter Wilson says:

I wonder if Mr Farrugia, lives in Malta, and if he would like this development at the end of his road.

Gozo does need development, but first all the vacant properties need to be sold or rented, some of which have been standing empty to my knowledge for at least 10 years.

What local people don’t want is to turn Gozo into a tourist attraction, that people cant afford. They need jobs but for a fair wage, a good days work for a good rate of pay. Gozitans work hard, and deserve to share the benefits of progress.

The developers need to listen, and push forward a scheme which will NOT damage the Eco Gozo.

    5. Alan Gatt says:

No body has the right to touch Qala Grieg with out an EIA , as it is part of Hondoq Bay we residents of Qala like it the way it is .

So, GRTU Mr Farruga want to create jobs !!! let us tell him to find jobs for men to demolish illegal building constructed on the State Land, or instant like the Nadur Cemetery .. . and to clean Ramla bay from stones and litter.

The Marina Project should never have even been considered in the first place, as Gozo is not a traditional holiday-complex-destination. This had been proved by the inability of the Imgarr hotel complex (directly above a marina) being unable to survive. The hotel, tourist complex proposed at Fort Chambray has been changed to an ordinary apartment complex and is now a ghost town. The San Lawrenz spa hotel can only exist due to the time sharing units added after the hotel was built (in ODZ). The hotel was mostly empty in the winter months and the majority of employees are foreigners which goes to prove that developments such as this

DO NOT CREATE JOBS FOR GOZITANS!!!

The land should be made public and accessible to everyone, as the coastlines are in most civilized, democratic countries.

    7. CHARLIE MIZZI NICK NAME TA-RE says:

THE DOCTORS SHOULD KNOW THAT THE OIL AND DIESEL IS UNHEALTHY IN THE SEA FOR PEOPLE TO SWIM IN.

HONDOQ IR-RUMMEN IS FOR THE PEOPLE OF QALA NOT FOR THE MILLIONAIRES – KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF HONDOQ.

HONDOQ SHOULD BE MADE A NATIONAL PARK FOR THE CHILDREN OF QALA.

      NO MARINA AND TOURIST VILLAGE.
