Nature Trust (Malta) has said that it strongly condemns the vandal attack on the trees planted at Qala by the children of the locality. Such deeds are an attack against society in general and only shows the ignorance of the person or persons that did such an act. Trees not only help to improve the rural environment of our towns and villages but also aid to improve the air quality.
Nature Trust (Malta) had launched the Green 2000 campaign in January 2000. The aim was to get people and organisations to adopt a tree and at the same time create awareness on the importance of indigenous trees to the islands and instil as sense of respect and ownership to trees in general. The NGO said that it is today happy that this campaign has now spread with government and authorities following this example and planting more trees.
The organisation concluded bys saying that it feels that this incident does not help the eco Gozo image and therefore urges the police to investigate such crimes and bring the doers to justice. It also appeals to the courts to give examples when passing the punishments that such deeds cannot be tolerated by society.
