Another initiative in conjunction with government’s vision of making Gozo an ecological island, was launched on Wednesday at the Ghajnsielem Primary School, where the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, launched the Resource package for teachers, covering topics that are related to sustainable development.
This package is intended to be used during lessons in primary and secondary schools around Gozo. The material contained in the package has been prepared by fifteen teachers who teach various subjects in primary and secondary schools around Gozo, with the coordination of Dr Paul J. Pace, the Director of the Centre for Environmental Education and Research, at the University of Malta.
The package will provide teachers with the materials needed when taking lessons linked to the National Curriculum themes on Gozo and sustainable development. These include presentations, videos, games, handouts, fieldwork, and programmes for visiting sites of interest. Besides subjects like social studies, arts and science, this package can also be used when teaching in various languages, including Maltese, English, Italian and French. It also includes topics related to the identity of the island of Gozo, such as the production of honey, the rubble walls, agriculture and the feasts.
The Minister said that these resource packages for teachers will increase the learning tool in classrooms, while also raising awareness about Gozo and its key features. She said that she believed that these packages are also to be distributed in schools in Malta. This will mean that the Ministry for Gozo will be using these resources to promote and create interest in the island of Gozo among Maltese students.
