The Vodafone Foundations have agreed a partnership with Vodafone operating companies worldwide to initiate an emergency SMS fundraising programme called Vodafone Red Alert. The programme is now available and is focussed on enabling Vodafone employees and the general public to donate via SMS in response to disasters and emergencies.
During the recent Haiti earthquake, many witnessed the power of SMS fundraising to raise in a short space of time, large amounts of funding for disaster relief programmes. In collaboration with the Vodafone Malta Foundation, Red Cross Malta through the generosity of the Maltese community managed to raise the sum of €15,000, which sum went towards the Haiti appeal.
Vodafone Foundations are keen to do more, and its companies in the following countries have agreed to operationalise the Vodafone Red Alert programme.
Albania, Australia, Czech Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Fiji, Germany, Ghana, Hungary, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal, Qatar, Romania, South Africa, Spain, Tanzania, Turkey, UK.
The request to launch a Red Alert in one particular country will rest with the local Vodafone Foundation and their Trustees. The Trustees (both local and global) will decide on the basis of a set of criteria which draws on the knowledge and expertise of those engaged in fundraising for disaster relief programmes. These include the size and scale of the disaster, the requests for support from the humanitarian relief organisations, the extent of response by the general public as well as whether Vodafone Foundations are already contributing to the appeal in question.
The method adopted for implementing a Red Alert programme will vary by country. The Vodafone Red Alert programme will initiate its own emergency SMS shortcode and process donations directly.
