Government urged to hold its ground on GMOs – AD

Government urged to hold its ground on GMOsAlternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party reiterates its strong opposition to the approval granted by the EU Commission for the cultivation of genetically modified Amflora potato. The EU Commission also allowed three GM maize products to be placed on the European market, though not grown in Europe.

“The introduction of GMOs brings about a threat to human health, a risk never to be taken. Whilst Amflora potato cultivation is not intended for human consumption, cross pollination with other non GMOs is a serious threat to consider,’ said Simon Galea, Spokesperson for Agriculture and Animal Welfare. ‘Citizens’ health should hold top priorty above all other interests including those of multinational companies involved in GMOs,” added Simon Galea.

“Following the position taken by EU Health and Consumer Policy Commissioner Mr. John Dalli, it is good to note that the Maltese Authorities have maintained their position and together with the Governments of Italy and Austria are against the introduction GMOs on the market,” concluded Mr.Michael Briguglio, Chairperson of Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party.
