The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, inaugurated new gym facilities at the Sports Complex in Victoria. The work on this project was carried out by the Sports Complex own workers, which changed rooms that were not used at the gym, installing modern equipment to help with physical exercises and weightlifting. Works of maintenance and refurbishment included restructuring, construction of new toilet facilities and new installations of lighting systems and water. Last year, the same workers were also engaged on other work in the sports complex that included painting, paving, installation of soffits, new showers and new installation services of water and sewage. The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, inaugurated the new facilitie, which were then blessed by His Excellency Mgr Mario Grech, Bishop of Gozo.
During her speech, Minister Debono expressed satisfaction for the way the work was carried out. She further stated that the inauguration of the section of the gym reflects another step that the Ministry for Gozo, through the Sports Complex, is enabling more sports facilities which are suitable for everyone, which will encourage everyone to use them regularly, as well as the other sporting disciplines that are available. She also referred to a vision of government to make Gozo an ecological island and said that the gym facilities that were launched will also feed into lifestyles that promote quality of life for the people of Gozo and for those visiting the island.
Every Saturday, the Sports Complex has a number of students from primary and secondary schools around Gozo taking part in the Skolasport programme. Among the sporting disciplines are those of hip-hop and breakdance, table/lawn tennis, gymnastics, climbing, dance aerobics, squash, volleyball, cycling, martial arts, handball and basketball, hockey skills and football. Furthermore, the sports facilities used by a growing number of members are the squash courts, the table-tennis room and facilities for indoor games such as basketball, volleyball and martial arts. Over the past year several international tournaments including Kendo have been held, as well as a seminar of about 100 people 70 of whom were foreigners.
Another project to promote lifestyles which are more healthy, in light of the eco-Gozo vision is the construction of and indoor swimming pool as part of this complex. This project, already in the planning process, will not only will improve sports facilities in Gozo, but will make the best use of energy systems and thus be more eco friendly.
