Mrs Catherine Gonzi, Chairperson of the HSBC Cares for Children Fund, today launched the official website of the Office of the Commissioner for Children www.tfal.org.mt during a visit to St Paul’s Bay Primary School (Maria Regina College).
The raison d’etre for the Office of the Commissioner for Children is to advocate for children and provide them with a voice in society. Engaging with children and creating a space where they can convey their aspirations towards an improved society are main objectives of the Office. This website aims to promote children’s accessibility to the Office of the Commissioner for Children through a medium that they enjoy using. An important tool for the Office, this website will enable the Commissioner for Children to continue to work for the best interests of children.
During the launch Mrs Catherine Gonzi said that communication not only improves relationships but it also builds bridges between those who need and can help. Mrs Gonzi added, ‘this website is a necessary tool for children to gain access to the Commissioner and have a space to share concerns and opinions about the challenges they face and how they wish to be helped. Giving children a voice that is heard is one basic right we owe to our children. Such communication will contribute towards creating a better society.’
The official website was designed in order to be engaging and appealing to children of all ages, facilitating their communication with the Commissioner for Children. The website is divided into sections for children aged 3-5, 6-9, 10-13, and 14-17. The website also incorporates a section for an older audience (18+), providing information on resources and legislation for researchers, academics, and those interested in the field of children’s rights. The website is available in both English and Maltese.
Today’s visit was the first in a series of visits to schools which are planned as part of the programme to mark the Official Launch of the Website. Throughout these visits, members of staff of the Office of the Commissioner for Children will be present in schools around Malta and Gozo to promote the website to children of various ages. A special programme including Guginu l-Iljuncinu is organised during each visit.
The official website of the Commissioner for Children was sponsored by HSBC Cares for Children Fund.
