Retail Price Index down 0.51% in January

Retail Price Index down 0.51% in JanuaryIn January 2010, the Retail Price Index went down by 0.51 per cent. This primarily reflected a drop of 21.41 per cent in the Clothing and Footwear Index, mainly due to seasonal price decreases in garments. Downward shifts in the prices of motor cars caused the Transport and Communication Index to go down by 0.25 per cent. The Household Equipment and House Maintenance Cost Index went down by 0.13 per cent, mainly on account of lower prices for household textiles.

The Water, Electricity, Gas and Fuels Index increased by 24.03 per cent, mainly due to higher water and electricity tariffs. Higher prices of vegetables underlay an increase of 1.01 per cent in the Food Index. Upward movements in the prices of materials used for the maintenance of dwellings mainly brought about an increase of 0.88 per cent in the Housing Index. The Personal Care and Health Index went up by 0.42 per cent, mainly on account of higher-priced hairdressing and personal grooming services. A rise in the price of audio-visual equipment mainly contributed to an increase of 0.20 per cent in the Recreation and Culture Index.

In December, the twelve-month moving average rate of inflation stood at 1.88 per cent, whereas the annual rate stood at 1.12 per cent.
