Gozo FA launches the Gozo Cup football tournament

The Gozo Football Association has launched the Gozo Cup tournament which is to be played between Friday, the 19th of February and Sunday, the 21st of February. This tournament, which is being held with the assistance of the Parliamentary Secretariat for Public Dialogue and Information, will be played at the Gozo Stadium and Sannat Ground.
Taking part in the tournament will be Valletta FC, AS Hibernians, Birkirkara FC and a chosen side (Gozo XI). Altogether there will be two semi-finals, final and play-off for third place.
Besides these games will there also be a number of tournaments in categories U / 8, U/10 and U/12, which will be played on several grounds around Gozo.
Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue and Information, Chris Said praised this initiative and said it will greatly help to strengthen the niche of sports tourism in Gozo. He also said that the intention is that this competition is held every year and will be a permanent addition on the calendar ‘winter activities in Gozo.
Chris Said said that the competition involving the top three clubs in Malta gives major boost to domestic tourism in Gozo over the out of season months. He also said that the Gozo Football Association will not stop here and is also working to bring foreign clubs for training sessions (training camps) to Gozo during the winter months.
He said that on the same lines as the Gozo Cup, work is ongoing to make a further competition in the sport of horse racing on the Gozo race course.
The President of the Gozo Football Association, Alvin Grech thanked the participating teams for their interest and said that those fans who buy tickets from the tournament’s offices in Cirkewwa, Gozo Channel will be giving the a special deal on the passengers’ ticket.
On their part the representatives of Valletta, Birkirkara and Hibernians say they are very satisfied to be given the opportunity to play because they believe that it will strengthen the link with this island and with supporters in Gozo.
The opening match of the tournament will be between Gozo XI and Hibernians. The kick off will be at 18:00hrs on Friday 19th February at the Gozo Stadium. At 20:00hrs Valletta FC will face Birkirkara FC. In case that the match after the 90 minutes ends in a draw, the winner will be decided through a penalty shoot-out without any extra time.
