NTM urges Gozo Church to set up Environment Commission

Nature Trust MaltaNature Trust Malta has said that it welcomes and supports Alternattiva Demokratika’s recommendation to the Gozo Church Authorities, that is to the setting up of an environment commission similar to the one set up in Malta.

The Trust added that the Maltese ecclesiastical environment commission has been doing sterling work ever since it was set up. It is today following Pope John Paul’s teachings, that is, ‘that mankind should be responsible and protect our natural heritage for future generations.’ This commission has taken a leading role in environmental issues in Malta speaking on sustainable development and highlighting issues such as waste, water and air problems.

NTM urged the Gozo church to also set up such a commission, especially as the island of Gozo can still proudly boast of a rich biodiversity and natural environment. Unfortunately as has already happened to Malta in the past, it is now Gozo’s turn to be bombarded by mega projects and unsustainable development. As in Malta, the Gozo church still holds a powerful position and thus it can be instrumental in saving our natural heritage from irreversible destruction. NTM concluded that it is confident that with the new and energetic Gozo bishop, such a commission will indeed be set up.
