Undue Pressure at Ninu Cremona Gozo College Secondary – MUT

Undue Pressure at Ninu Cremona Gozo College Secondary - MUTThe MUT is completely perplexed at the Ministry of Education, Culture Youth and Sport’s Statement carrying a “clarification” by the Directorate for Educational Services (DES) concerning the subject in caption.

The Directorate simply based its position on the assertion of the Head of School – the same person involved in the controversy. The Directorate did not even deign itself to check out matters at this School with other teaching staff or at least with the MUT School Delegate. In spite of this serious omission, the Ministry and the Directorate still thought fit of singling the MUT Delegate for not attending the meeting in question, rightly abiding to the Union’s directive.

The MUT cannot understand how the Education Authorities have acted as prosecutor, judge and jury at the same time. The Union cannot but condemn the Ministry’s and Directorate’s stance in the whole controversy. This incident is just one example of the sheer arrogance permeating the state educational establishment where employees are being denied the right of fair hearing and treatment. Now even Union delegates are being exposed and singled out for carrying out their legitimate role. All this is very worrying and reminiscent of the 1980s authorities’ attitude.

The MUT assures all teaching grades that these incidents will not deter it from continuing to work to better their conditions and to address injustice. All this will only serve to strengthen the Union in its endeavour.

The statement of the MUT and its General Secretary Franklin Barbara is a shame on the MUT itself. I guess it is absolutely normal, that the direction of the school arranges a meeting in interest of the 170 students with some deficiency.

What is the opinion of Mr Franklin, are the teachers for the children or are the children for the welfare of the teachers? Can the staff of any school not sacrifice 30 minutes for students with special needs? If a teacher cannot bring this “sacrifice”, he cannot be called “teacher”. He should go more looking for another job, like clearing the streets in Gozo, what would be a special need for this beautiful island.

To be a teacher in Malta/Gozo is a very convenient job and to represent these people like the MUT does, is even more convenient. Mr Franklin and dear MUT: you have no idea what it means to be a TEACHER! You have to shame yourselves!!!

is Steven Bugajakab interested to know that, instead of calling a complete work to rule, MUT has issued a few directives folowing the declaration of an employment issue between employer (GOvt) and employees (teachers – who in fact go well beyong their exact written-down duty)?!

    Dear Mr Vasallo,
My opinion: to be a TEACHER is for me not a simple job, but rather a vocation. In this sense, if a person, who teaches, is a TEACHER, is determined by his way and readiness finding time, patience and comprehension for the exact needs of the students and not by his eventual membership of the MUT. The first one is a teacher, the second one is only an employee.
I can only repeat: if for some “teachers” are 30 minutes for the students with special needs to much, they have better to look for another job, where they have not to do with children.

This confirms that you are unaware of the facts: the point was not 30 minutes or 30 hours; simply that this seems to have clearly violated a legal (and, I repeat, very limited) Union directive. I hope you are not arguing that teachers have no workers’ rights!
In any case, anyone who is supposedly so interested in children’s needs should know that teachers represent an outstanding category for voluntary activity.

    Dear Mr Vasallo,
It is just a shame if a teacher is not able to take time between 1 and 1.30 pm without complaining and without searching between the directives of MUT for ANY needs of his school and specially for the 170 students with special needs. Even having the famous worker’s rights.

Just a comparison: doctors have worker’s rights as well: you have an accident and a doctor nearby first would search between the directives of his Trade Union about working times. Second he would look at his watch seeing that his working time is already over. After than he would say to YOU, who is lying hurted on the road, „I am sorry old boy, good luck!” and would go away.
Would you think, he is right?

  6. Antoine Vassallo

Your arguments are now becoming ridiculous – you are obviously only interested in winning points! You are repeating incorrect facts: the argument was not the time or length of the meeting; thus no “working times” are involved.
My final suggestion: do read the directives to appreciate that the way to prudent procedure would have been for the Union to have been contacted before! Why a them-and-us attitude?!
