On Thursday, the 4th of February 2010, Xaghra Mayor, Mr. Joseph Cordina, signed the devolution of the council’s offices so that the ambitious project of the Civic Centre begins. This document was signed during a short ceremony held in the meetings’ hall at the council’s premises. Present for this occasion were Parliamentary Secretaries Dr. Chris Said (the Parliamentary Secretary for Information and Public Dialogue) and Dr. Jason Azzopardi (the Parliamentary Secretary for Revenues and Public Land), Mr. Albert Mamo (Commissioner of Public Land), Mayor Joseph Cordina, Xaghra councilors Mary Carmen Bajada and Joseph Bartolo together with the Executive Secretary Mr. Joseph Azzopardi.
The ceremony began at around 1.00pm with the arrival of the two Parliamentary Secretaries. Mayor Cordina showed them the plans of the whole work. This project, which is estimated to cost around € 400,000, consists of a process by which the existent building is demolished and a Civic Centre is built – this centre incorporates the administrative offices of the Local Council, the Police Station, the public clinic and the public toilets.
The proposed project incorporates well with the measures announced some weeks ago as part of the Local Councils’ Reform. Among these measures, one can mention the need of the council to serve as a one stop shop where all the residents can be given an adequate and efficient public service. The whole work satisfies also the ‘accessibility’ concept since the new building is expected to include a lift to facilitate the needs of the elderly and the disabled people. The project is expected to begin in the coming months and we hope that everything moves in the best possible way for the benefit of our community in Xaghra.
