Students who attend the Nadur Primary school within the College of Gozo, took part this morning in a symbolic ceremony to commemorate Arbor Day 2010 in Gozo. For this occasion the fruit garden at the school was inaugurated. The garden had been started at the school as part of the plan of action of the Ekoskola Committee.
At the ceremony the Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, inaugurated the fruit garden as well as a cemmorative plaque. The garden was planted with citrus and olive trees that were given by the Nadur Local Council.
It is planned that the school children will go on to take care of the gardening, tree care and harvesting of the fruit, as well as prepare food from the produce at the school. Furthermore, there is also the view that children who participate in the process of collecting olives, will eventually be able to produce olive oil as well. This helps to reinforce the educational policy of the school in promoting and teaching environmental practices and healthier lifestyles.
The ceremony continued with a programme themed for the occasion and held in the hall of the school, which included readings of prose and poetry and singing amongst other. A student from each class was given packets of seeds of native trees to be distributed to each student. At the end of the ceremony, children were given a portion of fruit with a view to further raise awareness among children on the benefits that trees give us.
The Parliamentary Secretary for Public Dialogue and Information, Chris Said, was also present for the occasion.
