The government has allocated €303,000 to aid nine local councils, which includes Gharb Local Council, as well as the Association of Local Councils with EU project applications.
Gharb Local Council funds will be used for the 2nd phase of the Wied il-Mielah rehabilitation project. The works will include construction of rubble walls and bridges which have been destroyed, cleaning of the valley basin and resurfacing of the road leading to the valley in order to make it more accessible. In the mean time directional signs will also be erected to indicate the way to this recreational area.
In a ceremony to mark the allocation held on Wednesday at Gardjola Garden, Malta. Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said said that the MEUSAC Funding unit had been a big help in aiding pro-active councils who wanted to benefit from funds from EU projects.
He announced that between 2004 and 2008, the Local Councils have benefited from € 1.8m Euro and in 2009 alone, total funds have risen dramitically to €3.8m, which exceeds the target of €3m for this year. The Parliamentary Secretary Chris Said went on to say that the goal for 2010 is that Local Councils get €6m for European funded projects and initiatives for localities.
The Local Councils that have been awarded funds are Vittoriosa, Gharb, Hamrun, Kirkop, Dingli, Senglea, Mtarfa, San Lawrenz and Valletta.
