- Nature Trust (Malta) message for World Environment Day
Nature Trust (Malta) expresses its disappointment at the outcome of the Climate Change Copenhagen summit. The World leaders have again failed to understand the importance and urgency of the situation. The five big countries – USA, Brazil, South Africa, China and India have completely ignored the whole issue and have put their interests before the common good of the planet. The agreement was stronger on Financial aid to the developing polluters, but it was not binding, and set no urgent deadline to sign a real climate treaty. Furthermore countries like India, Brazil and South Africa where the level of poverty is high, will themselves are themselves face higher problem of poverty through their own actions at such a summit
It is ironic that while civil society and environmental NGos seem to be greatly concerned on our future, some world leaders are simply coming up with excuses. Furthermore while big countries may too face problems, however it is the small ones that will face the hardship especially small islands like Malta, Cyprus, etc where water level rise will make land use an even major problem.
While NTM acknowledges the fact that the EU members states did a lot of pressure to get a better deal, yet NTM feels that they were not as strong in their case and did not take the leadership the people were expecting, but gave in to the five big countries demands.
NTM now urges the Maltese Government and the Maltese MEPs to keep up their pressure at EU level for the EU to keep up the pressure on other countries such as USA. NTM also feels that Malta is still too far behind to actually meet the EU targets and the authorities should pull up their socks and start implementing the strategy so Malta can live up to is name that of not only being the first country to raise the Climate change issue at UN level but also as being one of the first to reach the targets of the EU.
