20th Anniversary of the Coronary Care Unit in Gozo

20th Anniversary of the Coronary Care Unit in GozoNext week will commemorate the 20th anniversary of the inauguration of the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) at the Gozo General Hospital. It was inaugurated by Dr. Anton Tabone on December, the 9th 1989.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting the CCU – it now also incorporates the Intensive care unit. I hasten to add that I was not a patient, but just an observer. However, had I been the former, I am confident that I would have felt comfortable and well cared for as the equipment was super-modern, the ward bright and cheerful and the staff friendly and obviously highly competent. However, I am sure that many people are not aware that the modernization of this ward has been made possible by the hard work of the Gozo CCU Monitor Foundation, founded and Chaired by Dame Carmen Bellamy, a Gozitan, who is a very special lady indeed. Carmen and her team have provided the majority of the equipment used to embellish this unit.

20th Anniversary of the Coronary Care Unit in GozoThis equipment had been purchased using local and foreign donations received by the CCU Foundation and their sponsors and is not the result of the good works by the government or ministry for Gozo as has been reported in the press (The Times, November 24, 2009 for example).

Included in the equipment provided by the Foundation is a comprehensive patient observation system consisting of 8 monitors and a central console and printer for the nurse’s station, 6 fully electronic, state-of-the-art beds, including special mattresses, over-bed tables, and other related accessories. An air mattress and air overlays which are used to help prevent bed- or pressure sores. The most recent acquisitions are 2 Biphasic Defibrillators, both of which can be used as an external (temporary) pace maker.Thankfully, the equipment listed here doesn’t mean much to most of us – but let me assure you that it has made the lives of many patients in Gozo much more comfortable and has possibly made the difference between life and death for many as well.20th Anniversary of the Coronary Care Unit in Gozo

Had it not been for this foundation, the equipment available would still have been that which was installed 20 years ago – or rather what was left of it.

Please join me in giving ‘credit where credit is due’ and thanking the CCU Foundation team and their generous donors for making such an important contribution to the Gozo General Hospital.

Sincerely

Lesley Gail Kreupl
