Qala Council calls for MEPA action on Xerri development

Qala Local Council has written to the Chairman of MEPA calling on him to outline the steps being taken since the findings of the MEPA Auditor were published regarding the Xerri il-Bukkett complex application. A copy of the letter was also sent to the Prime Minister.

The Council said that having analyzed the MEPA Auditor’s report on planning application PA 07810/06, the Qala Local Council is vindicated in the position it has always maintained in its correspondence to MEPA, that this development will have a negative impact not only on the surroundings but above all on the landscape and will irrevocably ruin one of the most beautiful views in Malta and Gozo.

The Local Council also called for discussions to be re-opened between MEPA and the Local Council on the Qala Local Plan, some of which had been changed without the Local Council being informed, it insisted that Mepa should not hide behind the excuse that an appeal into the controversial building permit was pending.

The Council also highlighted the series of statements issued by various NGOs and Commissions which have commented negatively on the issuing of the development permit, adding that this further strengthens the argument of both the MEPA Auditor and the Qala Local Council, that this application should have been taken with greater responsibility because the sensitivity of the area involved.

How could we still have faith in Mepa when the local plan was changed to a rural settlement when there are only two buildings

I don’t think anyone has any faith in MEPA anymore, except maybe those who have lots of money and friends for favours! It is a real shame that Gozo is being destroyed not-so-slowly, but-surely. I am just a fussy expat who will be dead soon, so it is no skin off my nose, although I really do care, but what about the future generation of Gozitans? What will there be left for them to inherit? What will they think of us – the baby-boomers and their children who destroyed the world!
I can only ask MEPA and the government to think before they act!

Why do the images of the development shown bear no resemblance to the actual development, Visit the site & see for yourself.

    Hi Michael,

I actually did see Mepa`s reply today on the local papers and I could not find out where Xerri`s complex was as it was so Far Far away.

What I find hard is why the developers submitted these photo montages that are so far away. Why ?
