Fish landings in Gozo up by 182.6% in 3rd quarter

Volume & wholesale value of fish landings in Gozo up by 182.6% & 18.4% In the third quarter of 2009, fresh fish landings at the local fish market amounted to 526,670 kilograms, up by 73.1 per cent over the third quarter last year. This resulted from more landings in most of the species, mainly Swordfish (+24.6 per cent) and Dorado (+20.4 per cent). The spike in Mackerel landings by Gozitan fishermen was also a contributing factor. The wholesale value of fresh fish landings rose by 32.1 per cent, from €1,671,174 in the third quarter of 2008 to €2,207,661 in the corresponding period this year.

Regional overview

During the period under review, Maltese fishermen landed 286,376 kilograms of fresh fish at the local fish market, up by 31.2 per cent over the comparative period last year. Swordfish and Dorado landings, which registered rises of 22.7 and 35.0 per cent respectively, accounted for 71.0 per cent of all landings by Maltese fishermen. As regards volume, landings of Maltese fishermen represented 54.4 per cent of total landings. The wholesale value of fish landings went up by 34.7 per cent, from €1,320,262 in the third quarter of 2008 to €1,777,772 this year. The increase in the wholesale value of fresh fish was mainly due to growths in Swordfish, Dorado and Shrimp landings, with respective wholesale value gains of 28.9, 48.7 and 61.1 per cent over the third quarter of 2008.

In the third quarter this year, Gozitan fishermen landed 235,422 kilograms of fresh fish (+182.6 per cent) at the fish market, mainly attributable to a multiple rise in Mackerel landings by Gozitan fishermen. On the other hand, landings of Shrimp contracted by 45.2 per cent. In volume, Gozitan fish landings made up 44.7 per cent of total landings, generating €400,587 in wholesale value. This 18.4 per cent rise was primarily due to a higher wholesale value in respect of Swordfish landings.

Foreign vessel landings

In the third quarter of 2009, foreign-flagged vessels landed a total of 4,872 kilograms, 87.4 per cent more over the comparative period in 2008. During the period under review, landings by foreign-flagged vessels represented 0.9 per cent of the total catch, while their wholesale value more than doubled, from €12,567 in 2008 to €29,302 in 2009.

Indices

The quarterly ‘All Items’ fresh fish price index for the period under review stood at 95.38 points, down by 25.73 points (-21.2 per cent) over the corresponding quarter in 2008. In contrast, the quarterly ‘All Items’ fresh fish volume index improved by 66.57 points (+73.1 per cent) in the third quarter of 2009.
