Gozo Day was celebrated on Wednesday, the 28th of October, for the fourth year running. A commemorative event was held in Independence Square in Victoria.
Gozo day commemorates the day when Gozo was liberated from the French occupation, as a result of which Gozo for a brief beriod of time gained complete autonomy. This year is the 211 anniversary of that important day.
For this activity was organised by the National and Regional Celebrations Committee within the Ministry for Gozo in collaboration with the Circolo Gozitano, a number of children from schools around Gozo attended the celebration. There was also a reading of the two essays which won the contest that was launched between students of primary and secondary schools of the College of Gozo for this occasion.
The ceremony also included presentation of an original copy of the words and music of the hymn for Gozo from its music composer, Mro Joe Vella. The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, who chaired the ceremony, presented a copy of the words and music and CD to the Mayors and Heads of schools in Gozo.
The ceremony ended with the placing of wreaths at the monument of the Archpriest Saver Cassar, by the Minister for Gozo, by the Chairman of the Committee on National and Regional Holidays, the Principal of the College of Gozo and President of the Circolo Gozitano.

With reference to the above news from Gozo, I would like to add that on 12TH.SEPTEMBER l959, under the baton of Maestro Andrea Borg, the Xewkija Band, Il-PREKURSUR, was the first Maltese Band to play the Gozo Hymn, musical work of Prof Joseph Vella.
The Gozo Hymn formed part of a musical programme held at Rundle Gardens in Victoria, Gozo. This musical programme was
part of the national festivities celebrations organised in l959.
This is documented in the Musical Soicety Prekursur
History.
It is a know fact that it was on the zealous initiative of my late father Wenzu Camilleri, (ex bandsman, and finally ex-president of te same society) that the music of the Gozo Hymn found itself so early,in the archives of the same society.
