The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, together with the Parliamentary Secretary, Jason Azzopardi, visited the Lands department in Gozo and saw some of the farmers signing up for the ALS. The scheme was started in 2000.
The scheme was offered to the farmers by the property division in Gozo from April this year. This meant that the farmers did not have to travel to Malta to sign for the scheme.
Jason Azzopardi said that since April 150 contracts had been signed in Gozo, this figure was expected to double by the end of the year. He commented that the scheme had been running very smoothly since it started in April.
The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, said that 3,001 applications, or one third, were from Gozitan farmers since the start of ALS.
Farmers who submit applications have to provide information to prove that they have been farming for at least two years on the land that the ALS is applied for, along with a plan of the property to show the boundaries of the land in question.
