By Jackie East – Sunday the 30th of August at 1.00pm saw the start of the Citadel Insurance Yacht Race from the Imperial Gozo Yacht Club.
Seven boats took part in the race from Mgarr Harbour round the rock at Mgarr Ix-Xini over to the fish farm and back to the Harbour, it was a chance for all seven to jostle for position, with handicaps to take into account it was going to be anyone’s race. Around the fish farm gave everyone a chance to tack to try to win the advantage.
From my birds eye view on sailing yacht Wacky Wacky, we were aware of the fast leaders on sailing yacht Chardonnay who lead almost all the way – we held our 2nd position to the finish line, and the others close behind, racing for places. So everyone over the line, but who would win – we waited for the places to be announced – SY Chardonnay had held her first place, with Illusion II in second place – Wacky Wacky in third followed by First Class, Third Time Lucky, Prime Time and Rusty Nail. You may say it’s a race and there are winners and losers – I say there are only winners, as it was a good close race, its fun and everyone had a smile on their faces. For those who have never raced before give it a go – for those that have never sailed before get in a boat.
Malta and Gozo must offer some of the best sailing conditions in the World as they say ‘ its normally windy’ and being islands there is certainly enough water.
