Gharb Local Council signs new twinning agreementEarlier this year, the Gharb Local Council with the collaboration of MEUSAC was awarded EU funds under the programme ‘Europe for Citizens’ for a citizens meeting to be held in Gharb in order to sign a new twinning agreement. The Council would like to thank MEUSAC and its staff for their continuous help and support in order to submit more applications for EU Funding.

It was for this reason that between the 27th August and the 1st of September, the Gharb Local Council hosted delegations from Comunita’ Collinare Colli Tortonesi and Veglie at Gharb.

Comunita’ Collinare Colli Tortonesi is a community of 10 Local Councils found in Piemonte, Italy. The Local Councils representing the Comunita’ are: Carbonara Srivia, Carezzano, Gavazzana, Paderna, Sardigliano, Sarezzano, Spineto Scrivia, Villalvernia, Villaromagnano and Volpedo.

This group of Councils has a good and precious geological and climate characteristics to produce high quality wine. Apart from this, the area is also rich in historical and cultural aspects and is infact a well known tourist area.Gharb Local Council signs new twinning agreementVeglie is a town in the Italian province of Lecce in the Apulia region of south-east Italy. Veglie is located 20 km west of Lecce and 12 km east of the sea, the Gulf of Taranto. It is a small village similar to Gharb and it was founded around the 10th century. It’s origin name comes from the pre-Messapic ‘vel’ of the Mediterranean origin meaning ‘elevation’.

Its main industry is agriculture which features the production and manufacturing of olive and wine. Ice cream is also produced in the village.These delegations were hosted by the Gharb Local Council in typical farmhouses of the locality and together with the local residents they partecipated in various educational, cultural and sports activities that were organised for the occasion.

They also attended various tours of the historical and cultural interest around the Maltese Islands.The peak of the activities was reached on Saturday, the 29th of August when the Gharb Local Council celebrated Gharb Day with a Mass of Thanks Giving at the Gharb Basilica Church followed by an intercultural evening at the Gharb Main Square, Pjazza Zjara tal- Madonna which included: presentation of wreaths in front of Bishop Mikiel Molina Monument, dancing and singing by local talents, presentation of certificates to students attending courses organised by the Council and also to students graduating for the University of Malta.

Present for the evening were Giovanna Debono Minister for Gozo, Parliamentary Secretary Dr. Chris Said and other distinctive guests. Other awards were also presented during the evening:

Premju Gieh l-Gharb was awarded to Brother Spiridione Galea for his missionary work which he has been doing for several years.

Premju Qlub Generuzi was awarded to Family Micallef for the good example of catholic faith although the great difficulties they have met through their life.

Local Voluntary Award was awarded to Raymond Cauchi, an exemplary person who is always helping in the Parish Church most particularly during the setting up of feast decorations.

The Gharb Gozitan Cultural Award was won by Soprano Miriam Cauchi for her talent in lyrical singing. Ms. Cauchi was born and brought up at Gharb.

The signing of the twinning agreement also took place during the evening. During the speeches given by the representatives of the Italian delegations, they showed their appreciation for the hospitability they were given during their stay at Gharb. They added that this first exchange will open the opportunity to more exchanges between their localities and that of Gharb.

An exhibition of typical products was also setup as part of the twinning event and Gharb Day Celebrations. Exhibited Gozitan products varied from food, wine and lace. The Italian guests also participated by organising a buffet of typical Italian dishes which was offered to all those present. They also played their traditional music and gave a performance and explanation of the traditional dancing found in their area. WasteServ and MRA also organised information stands during the evening.
